The interim government has decided to suppress all
unauthorised street demonstrations, irrespective of the demands, in the run up
to the national elections in February, as authorities want to ensure peaceful
and credible polls.
The entire process centring the unapproved street demonstrations for
pressing home different demands would be thwarted with an iron hand following
the polls schedule announcement, said the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary
Shafiqul Alam at a briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital
on Thursday.
Shafiqul referred to the home ministry’s previous statement
in this regard.
"From the announcement of the election schedule until
polling day, any illegal and unauthorised public gathering or movement that
causes public suffering will be strictly controlled,” it was said in the
statement on Tuesday.
"We know that many have legitimate demands... But we are
now in an election-oriented period. Therefore, on behalf of the government,
everyone is being urged to present whatever demands they have to the
post-election government. We hope that during this period, no one will create
tension or disrupt the normal environment over their demands,” the statement
added.
