Election Commissioner Brig Gen (Retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said on Wednesday that the country’s electoral system has been “significantly damaged” in recent years.
He stressed that restoring its credibility is now a national priority, urging political parties, voters, journalists, observers, and relevant institutions to act responsibly in rebuilding public confidence and ensuring a genuinely fair electoral process.
He made this remark at the inauguration of a day-long training for journalists at the Election Training Institute (ETI) in Agargaon in the capital.
Highlighting the importance of the training, he said the program is a timely initiative under the joint efforts of the Election Training Institute and the project team.
Commissioner Sanaullah said the training is not just about participation but also about active engagement, discussion, and reviewing best practices to improve future electoral events.
“This is arguably the most consequential election in independent Bangladesh’s history. As we approach the February 2026 elections, it is crucial for all stakeholders to understand their responsibilities and contribute consciously to a transparent and inclusive electoral process,” he said.
He urged journalists to play a pivotal role, stating that their work ensures transparency in elections, and the Election Commission will continue to support them fully.
He also outlined operational realities, such as managing voter flow efficiently, ensuring smooth polling processes, and using QR codes to prevent misuse of press credentials.
The commissioner concluded by wishing success for the training and encouraging all participants to contribute diligently, ensuring the program benefits everyone involved.
He officially inaugurated the training, marking the start of an intensive and inclusive session aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s democratic processes.
