Members of the Special Security Force (SSF) have begun duty to ensure the security of BNP Chairperson and three-time former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who is now undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

The SSF members took position at the hospital around 2:20pm on Tuesday, confirmed BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

Earlier, the government declared Khaleda Zia a “Very Very Important Person” (VVIP) and assigned the Special Security Force for her protection. A notification in this regard was issued on Monday night.

According to the notification, Khaleda Zia has been declared a VVIP under Section 2(a) of the Special Security Force Act, 2021. The decision took immediate effect.

The former prime minister has been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since 23 November due to various age-related complications.

News of her illness has drawn large crowds of party activists and members of the public to the hospital premises.

Although police have been deployed, the gathering has created challenges for maintaining a secure environment.
