BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the interim government is attempting to hurriedly pass two important laws ahead of the national election— a revised Police Commission Act and a new legislation concerning NGOs.
In a
statement on Friday, Fakhrul said the party has learned from “credible sources”
that the government is moving swiftly to approve these laws without public
mandate.
He
warned that such actions, taken just before the election, may indicate “ulterior
motives” that could hinder the country’s democratic transition.
“It
would not be appropriate to pass such important laws in haste and without the
people’s mandate,” the BNP secretary general said.
He added
that the proper approach would be to allow the next elected parliament to
debate and formulate these laws through due deliberation.
The BNP
has called on the government to refrain from taking such steps before the
national polls.
