BRAC announces Tk50 lakh in support for Korail fire victims

BRAC has announced an emergency support package of Tk50 lakh for families affected by the devastating fire that swept through Korail slum on Tuesday.

The organisation said its staff members are already on the ground assessing damage and providing initial assistance to help affected families stabilise and regain a sense of normalcy, according to a press release issued on Wednesday.

The fire broke out around 5:30pm on Tuesday and was brought under control after prolonged efforts by firefighters, but not before it destroyed numerous homes in one of Dhaka’s largest informal settlements.

BRAC has urged the public to contribute to its relief efforts.

According to the press release, BRAC has a long record of responding to urban fires and other emergencies in Korail and similar settlements across Dhaka, providing cash assistance and other critical support based on community needs.

The organisation said it will continue working to strengthen the ability of vulnerable communities to cope with future crises.
