The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police took Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's information adviser, into custody on Wednesday for questioning over an unspecified incident.
He was picked up in front of the DBC News office in the capital's Mohakhali area around noon and later taken to the DB office on Minto Road.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Akhter Hossain confirmed that Iqbal Sobhan had been taken to the DB office for questioning over an "unwanted incident". Police have yet to disclose further details.
Allegations have surfaced that Iqbal Sobhan sought to claim the chairmanship of DBC News and take control of the television channel. Sources familiar with the matter said the DB acted on intelligence information to prevent a possible untoward situation.
Iqbal Sobhan, a veteran journalist, served as information adviser to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and held leadership positions in journalists' organisations.
Recent allegations suggest that he held discreet meetings with pro-Awami League journalists to discuss attempts to take control of media outlets amid ongoing unrest in the garment sector. The alleged move involving DBC News has been linked to those meetings.
However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and police have not publicly confirmed them.
