The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved three cases against former prime minister’s adviser and Beximco Group Vice Chairman Salman F Rahman, his son Ahmed Shayan Fazlur Rahman and 35 others over the alleged embezzlement and laundering of Tk1,121.49 crore through fake import-export transactions involving loans from Janata Bank.
ACC Secretary Saidur Rahman Khan disclosed the decision at a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters on Monday.
According to the ACC investigation, loans were obtained from Janata Bank’s Dhaka Local Office in the names of three newly established companies — Springful Apparels Ltd, Urban Fashions Ltd and Midwest Garments Ltd.
Despite their directors having no prior business experience, the companies allegedly secured loan facilities, including benefits under the Export Development Fund (EDF), through collusion with bank officials.
The companies allegedly used back-to-back letters of credit (LCs) to fabricate import-export transactions and generate false bills. The funds were subsequently withdrawn from the bank, with portions allegedly transferred abroad and laundered through various transactions.
