The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has drawn up a modernisation roadmap featuring specialised investigative units, advanced drug-detection equipment and measures to expedite narcotics-related trials.
The proposed reforms include establishing a Cyber Security and Money Laundering Unit, a dedicated canine squad, a digital forensic laboratory and a specialised training academy to strengthen investigations and enforcement capabilities.
Additional Director General (Joint Secretary) of the DNC Mohammad Golam Azam told the Daily Sun that the action plan aims to transform the department into a technology-driven and professionally equipped agency capable of tackling evolving drug-related threats.
The department also plans to introduce body cameras, portable drug detectors, advanced X-ray scanners and modern communication devices for field officers.
To improve prosecution, the DNC has proposed recruiting specialised public prosecutors and establishing prosecution offices at Chief Metropolitan Magistrate courts. It also plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Armed Police Battalion for joint anti-narcotics operations at airports and other strategic locations. According to DNC sources, the department currently has 2,272 personnel against an approved strength of 2,943, leaving 671 posts vacant. Official vehicles are also unavailable in 13 districts.
The implementation of the roadmap will depend on timely funding, recruitment and improved logistics.
