Cruel hammer and tender childhood
A A

Six-year-old Yasin, a second-grader, spends his days breaking bricks alongside his mother under the Keraniganj-Postogola Bridge when children of his age are meant to be carrying schoolbags, playing with friends, and dreaming of a brighter future. Unable to wield the heavy iron hammer with one hand, the child gathers all his strength with both hands to strike the bricks, earning a small wage to help his family survive. Amid the dust and shattered bricks, a precious childhood is slowly slipping away, along with the dreams that should have filled his young life. With every blow of the hammer, Yasin breaks more than bricks. His story exposes the painful cracks in society’s commitment to protecting children’s rights. Yasin’s story reminds us that no child should have to trade their childhood for survival. The photo was taken on Wednesday. -Reaz Ahmed Sumon
