The BNP has expelled Mofizur Rahman Mamun, president of Ward-91 unit of BNP in Pallabi, from the party, citing allegations of unethical conduct and activities contrary to the organisation’s interests.
A notice signed by BNP Assistant Office Secretary Mohammad Munir Hossain on Tuesday said that Mamun had been removed from his primary membership as well as all party positions.
Mamun, who is now in Malaysia, has also been accused by law-enforcement authorities of involvement in organised criminal activities in the greater Mirpur area.
Police sources have previously alleged that his network controlled extortion, the scrap and garment-waste trade, land grabbing and drug trafficking in parts of Pallabi, Mirpur-12, Sagufata and Baunia.
Police records cited in previous reports indicate that Mamun has faced multiple criminal cases, including allegations relating to murder, extortion, drugs, illegal firearms and robbery.
According to law-enforcement sources, Mamun’s two brothers – identified as Mohammad Jamil Rahman and Mashiur Rahman – have allegedly operated the network in Bangladesh while Mamun remained abroad.
Named in police extortion list
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) reportedly prepared a list last March identifying extortionists and extortion hotspots across the capital.
The list was compiled with information from local police stations, the Detective Branch (DB), Special Branch (SB) and the DMP commissioner’s intelligence unit.
According to police sources, the list identified 72 alleged extortionists
operating across seven areas in Mirpur, along with 25 alleged patrons or associates. Mamun and his two brothers were reportedly among those named.
Being included in such a police list, however, does not by itself establish criminal liability, and allegations would require determination through due legal process.
Allegations linked to Jubo Dal leader’s killing
Mamun's name has also surfaced in connection with the killing of Golam Kibria, a former member secretary of the Pallabi Thana unit of Jubo Dal.
Police subsequently arrested three alleged shooters in connection with the murder case. Law-enforcement officials reportedly identified the three as members of Mamun's alleged criminal network.
Previous arrest and cases
Mamun was arrested by police in February 2021. At the time, police said that he had left Bangladesh for India in 2004 after serving a period in jail in 2001.
Police also said that he was arrested in India in 2008 on allegations of passport forgery and illegal entry and subsequently served a 10-year prison sentence.
According to police accounts at the time, he continued to exercise influence over criminal activities in Mirpur while living in India.
After returning to Bangladesh, Mamun was arrested in 2021.
A police statement said that authorities had found information about 27 cases against him at Pallabi police station involving allegations including extortion, murder, narcotics, use of illegal firearms and robbery.
The same statement reportedly mentioned 15 arrest warrants and two warrants related to sentences.
Police sources later said that Mamun obtained bail following his arrest and subsequently left the country.
Law-enforcement sources have further alleged that his influence increased following the political upheaval of July.
