BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday blamed activists of opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for recent arson and crude bomb attacks in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
“Alongside activists of the ousted regime, self-proclaimed terrorists of the opposition party are responsible for the recent arson attacks,” Rizvi said while addressing a programme at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
At least 15 buses were torched and 30 crude bombs exploded across the capital and elsewhere from Friday to Sunday, raising security concerns nationwide.
Rizvi, also an adviser to the prime minister, said buses and trains were being set alight and crude bombs detonated at various locations, including near the High Court and university gates.
He warned that those responsible would be unmasked before the nation.
“Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has opposed every movement so far launched in the people’s interest,” he said, accusing the party of repeatedly betraying the public.
Referring to vandalism at Rajshahi Railway Station, he alleged the student wing of a banned organisation was involved.
Rizvi said everyone has the right to criticise the government democratically, urging critics to address the country’s real problems rather than making sweeping allegations.
He defended the recent fuel price adjustment, saying the government buys diesel at Tk205 per litre but sells it at Tk115, incurring a loss of around Tk90 per litre – a loss that would fall to about Tk70 after the adjustment.
He added that diesel prices in Bangladesh remain lower than in Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and India.
