The second unit of Adani Power’s Godda power plant in Jharkhand, India, has resumed operations following a technical fault, bringing both units back online to supply electricity to Bangladesh.
The recovery comes as one of the two units at the coal-fired Rampal Thermal Power Plant suffered an unexpected outage, reducing the plant’s output to below 600MW.
According to sources at the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Power Grid Bangladesh PLC (PGCB), the second unit at Godda resumed generation at around noon on Sunday.
By 2pm, the plant’s first unit was supplying 756MW and the second unit 290MW to Bangladesh, with combined supply rising to 1,453MW by 6pm, according to officials.
The 1,600MW Godda facility comprises two 800MW units under a power purchase agreement signed with the BPDB in 2017.
During peak demand periods, the plant has delivered upwards of 1,500MW to the Bangladeshi grid.
The second unit had been offline since midnight on 9 September.
Prior to the failure, the plant was supplying more than 1,400MW an hour, but output halved to around 758MW following the outage.
The sudden drop added further strain to Bangladesh’s grid amid an acute supply deficit. At 3pm on Thursday, national demand reached 16,345MW against an available supply of 12,788MW, leaving a 3,557MW shortfall and driving average load-shedding to 2,657MW an hour.
The return of the second Adani unit is expected to offer partial relief to the national grid, though issues elsewhere continue to hamper total generation capacity.
At the Rampal plant – a joint Bangladesh-India initiative – a technical snag forced one of its two units offline, cutting production to under 600MW from more than 1,100MW recorded the previous day.
Plant officials confirmed there is sufficient coal in stock, adding that engineers are investigating the cause of the failure to restore full operation as quickly as possible.
