Police on Thursday revealed how alleged top criminal David Emon managed to evade four police checkpoints across several districts before being arrested in Jashore while allegedly attempting to flee to India.
Speaking at a press conference in Chattogram, Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Masud Alam said Emon allegedly planned to cross the border after the arrest of his close associate, “Dhama Eliyas”, on 22 July. Investigators believe he intended to flee on the advice of fugitive top criminal Sajjad Ali, alias ‘Boro Sajjad’, who is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.
According to the SP, police received advance intelligence about Emon’s movements and set up a series of checkpoints across Cumilla, Munshiganj and Khulna. However, the suspect allegedly changed vehicles, drivers and routes several times, enabling him to evade capture.
Police said a joint operation involving law enforcement agencies from several districts finally intercepted Emon and three associates at Jhumjhumpur in Jashore shortly before dawn.
Masud Alam said investigators suspect operational information may have been leaked during the multi-district operation, allowing Emon to repeatedly avoid police checkpoints. He added that another listed criminal, Rayhan, also managed to evade arrest during a separate drive.
Police further alleged that Emon avoided making direct phone calls and communicated through foreign telephone numbers and encrypted messaging applications, making it difficult to trace his location.
Investigators said Emon had allegedly arranged to enter India through the Benapole border with the help of a cross-border smuggling network in exchange for 20,000 Indian rupees.
Police claimed to have recovered an Indian Aadhaar card bearing the forged name “Azhar Khan”, which they believe was intended to facilitate his movement after crossing the border.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) in Jashore Md Mirajul Islam said the suspects were travelling in a black Honda CR-V. According to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) records, the vehicle was registered in the name of Hope Textiles in Banani, Dhaka. Police said one of the three men arrested alongside Emon is a nephew of the company’s owner.
A Chattogram police team brought the four suspects back to the port city on Wednesday night.
Acting on information obtained during initial interrogation, police conducted a raid at Kanchan Nagar village in Fatikchhari upazila early on Thursday and recovered a foreign-made pistol, two locally made firearms and several sharp weapons from a house, police said.
The accused were later produced before the court of Chattogram Senior Judicial Magistrate Sayema Arefin, which ordered them shown arrested in three cases involving murder and illegal possession of firearms, according to court sources.
