President, PM issue separate messages
The four-day-long Police Week-2026 is set to begin today at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital, with a series of reform proposals expected to be formally placed during the event aimed at strengthening policing capacity, including the establishment of dedicated cyber and environmental police units.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate the event. Officials at Police Headquarters said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir is expected to formally present a set of proposals aimed at structural reforms in police administration during the programme.
The event will be held under the theme “My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First” and will continue until May 13.
Messages marking the occasion have been issued by the President, prime minister, home minister, senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the inspector general of police.
According to Police Headquarters, a total of 107 police personnel from different units were selected to be awarded the prestigious President Police Medal (PPM) and Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) for their outstanding performance over the past year.
However, the award ceremony was postponed , said police insiders.
The number of recipients stood at 62 in 2025, 400 in 2024, 117 in 2023 and 230 in 2022.
Among the key reform proposals is a structured, time-based promotion system suggesting fixed timelines for career advancement, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) under a structured schedule, Additional SP after five years of service, Superintendent of Police (SP) after 10 years, Additional Deputy Inspector General (Addl DIG) after 14 years, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) after 18 years, and Additional Inspector General (Addl IGP) after 20 years of service.
Sources said 181 officers of the 30th Bangladesh Civil Service (Police) batch will complete 15 years of service in June, while 182 officers of the 31st batch have already completed 14 years. However, many of them are yet to receive promotions, despite officers of similar rank in other cadres being elevated.
Another major proposal includes the creation of supernumerary posts for SP rank and above, alongside the formation of a dedicated Cyber Police Unit. Police data shows that 4,794 cases have been filed under the ICT Act, Pornography Control Act and Digital Security Act over the past five years.
Additional proposals include establishing two new Police Training Centres (PTCs), forming Mymensingh Metropolitan Police, creating a specialised Environmental Police Unit, and setting up a new Armed Police Battalion (APBn) unit in Rangpur.
The Police Week will open with a colourful and formal parade at Rajarbagh Police Lines ground, where the prime minister will inspect various contingents, receive salutes from parade units, and later deliver a policy direction speech to police personnel.
In his message, the President said the stability, good governance and development of the state depend largely on the honesty, professionalism and discipline of the police force. He praised the role of the police in ensuring a peaceful and orderly environment during the recently held 13th national election and expressed gratitude to all members of the force.
He also noted that modern crime has become increasingly complex, involving cyberspace, artificial intelligence and deepfake technology, and stressed the need for enhanced technical capacity including AI, data analytics, CCTV surveillance and digital forensics.
In his message, the prime minister said the government is implementing comprehensive programmes to build a prosperous, self-reliant and justice-based democratic state. He emphasised that public confidence in the police and improvement in law and order remain top priorities.
He further stated that strengthening the police force is directly linked to national development, crime prevention and overall progress, adding that ensuring a stable law and order situation is essential for democratic advancement. He also stressed the need for stronger action against mob violence, juvenile gangs and drug-related crimes.
