A Bangladeshi national on Thursday appeared before a US court after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) extradited him to Alaska from Malaysia on Wednesday, where he was arrested with the help of local authorities on charges of operating an international child sexual exploitation network.
In a statement, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska said Zobaidul Amin, 28, appeared before US Magistrate Judge Kyle F Reardon at 1:30pm.
The charges Zobaidul faces include conspiracy to produce child pornography, conspiracy to receive and distribute child pornography, child exploitation enterprise, production and receipt of child pornography, cyberstalking, aggravated identity theft, and wire fraud.
If convicted, he could face between 20 years and life in prison.
According to court documents, Zobaidul was indicted by a federal grand jury in Alaska in July 2022 for allegedly using social media platforms to coerce hundreds of minors in Alaska and elsewhere in the US, as well as abroad, into producing sexually explicit images and videos.
Officials noted that the indictment is an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Zobaidul had been living in Malaysia and attending medical school when he also was charged by Malaysia’s Attorney General’s Chambers with 13 counts related to the possession and production of child pornography in 2022.
Noting the US government's commitment to track down offenders abroad, US Attorney General Pamela Bondi said they would continue working with international partners to combat online child sexual exploitation and bring perpetrators to justice.
FBI Director Kash Patel said his agency remained committed to protecting children from exploitation regardless of whether the offenders were located in the US or overseas.
US District of Alaska Attorney Michael J Heyman described the significance of the case, noting the large number of victims involved.
FBI’s Anchorage field office Special Agent Rebecca Day said the arrest underscored that those targeting children online cannot evade justice by hiding behind anonymity or international borders.
