Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday slammed the BNP for not taking oath for the Constitutional Reform Council, terming it tantamount to an insult to the July National Charter.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after joining a cleanliness drive in the Monipur Girls’ High School area of Mirpur, part of the constituency from where he was elected an MP.
The Jamaat chief said it is the sacred duty of this parliament to implement all the reform proposals that have come forward based on the aspirations of July. “We believe that not taking the oath as members of the reform council is tantamount to an insult to the July National Charter.”
He said his party will play an active role in the House to remove “national trash” by implementing reform agendas. “We want to remove all national trash through reforming the state. We will build a clean Bangladesh,” he said.
“If we clean our own backyards by ourselves, the country will automatically become clean,” the Jamaat chief said, adding that if the July uprising had not taken place, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman would not have been able to become the prime minister.
“Even I myself would not have been able to become the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament without the July uprising,” he said, calling upon all to be sincere in the House in implementing the July Charter.
Shafiqur Rahman said leaders of the Jamaat-led alliance, elected in the 12 February national election, took oath on Tuesday as members of parliament and members of the Constitution Reform Council; however, BNP MPs refrained from taking the second oath.
The Jamaat ameer said they want to do something better for the country by participating in the parliament session, underscoring the need to remove the garbage from society, along with cleaning the rubbish from the streets. “We want to remove the garbage from people's minds, and this is our campaign today for humane reform and purification,” he said.
Every day after Fajr prayers, each of the party’s unit organisations must spend at least half an hour on cleanliness activities, and then, they will spend time with their families to engage in other social service initiatives, he said.
“From today, I want the Mirpur area to be developed as a model area. We will not wait for government funds to carry out this cleanliness work. However, I demand that this area not be deprived of its rightful allocations,” Shafiqur Rahman said.
The Jamaat chief himself participated in the street cleaning programme along with leaders and activists of the organisation after offering Fajr prayers.
During the time, he personally swept the dirt and garbage from the streets and put those in a special vehicle he had with him, and in this way, he spent about 15-20 minutes conducting the cleanliness campaign.
