“The Song of Agony: Arishadvarga”, a solo exhibition by artist Dr Abu Kalam Shamsuddin, exploring six human tendencies traditionally described as the Six Enemies or Six Faults; lust, anger, greed, arrogance, addiction and jealousy; was inaugurated at La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka in the capital’s Dhanmondi on Friday.
The exhibition reflects on how these tendencies influence human behaviour and, when left unchecked, affect individuals, communities and the environment. While such impulses may be inherent to human nature, the artist encourages viewers to recognise their presence and consider the importance of self-awareness and restraint.
Through the exhibition, Dr Abu Kalam Shamsuddin seeks to make these often-unconscious expressions visible. By portraying their disturbing and destructive dimensions, the artworks invite viewers to reflect on how personal impulses can shape everyday actions, relationships and society.
The exhibition also connects these human tendencies to the broader issue of environmental responsibility. Unrestrained human desires and behaviours have contributed to environmental degradation and the disruption of ecological balance. Particular attention is given to deforestation, forest protection, wildlife conservation and the preservation of natural habitats.
At its core, “The Song of Agony” invites audiences to reflect on the relationship between human behaviour, social responsibility and nature. It encourages viewers to become more conscious of the forces that influence their actions and consider how individual responsibility can contribute to a healthier and more balanced society and environment.
The exhibition is open to all from today to 13, daily from 3:00pm to 9:00pm, at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka, Dhanmondi.
