Marathon runner Md Farid Mia from Bangladesh Army clinched the first gold in the athletics discipline of the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Games at the Army Stadium on Friday.
Farid, who secured his fourth gold medal in the marathon after National Athletics 2019, ran 2:46:38 to achieve the feat. Army’s other two marathon runners - Firoz Khan and Kamrul Islam ran 2:46:40 and 2:57:50 to earn the silver and bronze medals respectively.“It was my fourth gold, I'm very happy. I've worked hard for it, so I got success. Now I want to continue it,” Farid said in his immediate reaction after winning the gold medal.
In the day’s men’s hammer throw at the same venue, Bangladesh Navy’s Md Mahfuz Hasan secured the gold medal with 50.85m throw while Army’s Md Shafiqul Islam won the silver with 48.74m throw and Md Jewel bagged the bronze with 44.29m throw.
Army’s Al Amin and Navy’s Samsurnahar earned gold medals in the men’s and women’s 1500m event at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
“I didn't take part in Bangabandhu 44th National Athletics Competition 2021 due to injury. The Games is my first national competition after the Covid-19 break,” said Al Amin.
In the women’s high jump, Ritu Akter from Army earned the gold medal while her nearest competitor Umme Hafsa Rumki of Navy earned silver. Both Ritu and Rumki jumped 1.69m but Ritu was declared champion due to the cross attempt rule. Ratna Khatun of Navy earned bronze jumping 1.60m.
Army Shooting Association’s Yousuf Ali won the gold medal in the 10m air rifle event scoring 254.4 while Riasatul Islam and Commonwealth medalist Abdullah Hel Baki won silver and bronze medals respectively.In the 10m air rifle junior event, Arnab Sarar Ladif of Navy Shooting Club won the gold medal scoring 245.7 points while Tamzid bin Alam and Sakibul Alam bagged silver and bronze respectively.
In cycling, Rakibul Islam from Chittagong District Sports Association earned the gold medal in the men’s 30km road individual time trial at Hatirjheel after taking 45:09 to cover the distance.
Adnan Rahman from Dinajpur earned silver covering the distance in 46:2.25 while Ripon Biswash from BGB earned bronze covering the distance 46:59.74.
Army clinched gold medals in both men’s and women’s 60km road team time trial events held at the same venue.
In the bodybuilding discipline, Mushrafi Sahil from New Gold Health and Fitness Center earned the first gold medal held at the National Sports Council auditorium in the capital. Md Redwan from Galaxy Gym earned the silver medal while Hazrat Ali from Bangladesh Bodybuilding earned the bronze medal.
In the men’s master open, Abu Sayeed Mollah from Ansar earned the gold medal while Shahed Ali from Chittagong Metropolitan Sports Association and Zakir Hossain Khan from Future Fitness Health Club earned silver and bronze respectively.
BGB’s veteran wrestler Billal Hossain retired after winning a gold medal in the men’s 120kg of wrestling disciplinary at the Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex. Another BGB wrestler Abdur Rashid earned gold medal in the men's 97kg event.
Ansar wrestler Sukanti Biswash Swarna earned gold medal in the women's 62kg event while Army wrestler Sharmin Akter Swarno won gold medal in the women's 59kg event.
