At least 20 people were injured on Friday when supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam clashed with police at Gazipur’s Chandona.

The skirmish disrupted traffic at Board Bazar and surrounding areas, reports UNB.

Hefazat activists said they organised a procession from Chandona Chaurasta Jame Mosjid after the Jum’a prayers as part of their group’s protest programme.

A clash broke out after police charged batons, they claimed.

Mizanur Rahman, inspector of GMP’s Basan Police Station said they were forced to retaliate when brick chips were hurled at them from the procession.

Earlier on March 28, thousands of unruly Hefajat activists went on rampage, swooped on law enforcers, carried out arson attacks and vandalism and set fire to different government offices, schools and railway stations in Brahmanbaria.

They also resorted to vandalism in some private and government establishments, including Zila Parishad building, municipality building, Police Lines, Industrial School, Land office, Alauddin Music Academy, Foirtala Bus Stand.
