Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has appealed to the international community to include Bangla as an official language of the United Nations.

“We implore the international community to include Bangla as an official language of the United Nations,” he said.

The minister made this appeal while talking to journalists after placing wreaths on behalf of the Awami League at the Central Shaheed Minar marking Shaheed Dibash and International Mother Language Day early on Sunday.

Quader, also the general secretary of Awami League, said that nowadays Bangla as a language ranks sixth across the globe in terms of population who speaks that language. “But the language is yet to get recognition from the United Nations as its official language.”

About communalism, the minister said, “We couldn’t consolidate our victory since our independence merely for communalism which still prevails throughout the country and that’s why our pledge would be to wipe out communalism,” he said.

“It is our commitment to uproot the communal evil forces for building a democratic and prosperous country which Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman dreamt about.”

AL leaders, including Matia Chowdhury, Faruque Khan, Dr Hasan Mahmud, Ashim Kumar Ukil, Biplob Barua and Sayem Khan, among others, were present on the occasion.
