Project to enhance navigability of Khulna rivers on the cards

The government will embark on a project to improve navigability of rivers in Khulna division to increase the contribution of water transport to the country’s economy.

Under the project which is awaiting the final approval, the government will enhance navigability across 2300 kilometers of waterways to solve the waterlogging and salinity problem in the region, said a news release on Monday.

Addressing a workshop as the chief guest, Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque assured people who have been affected of providing them with compensation.

River dredging research organisation CIGIS organised the event to discuss the project. Local lawmaker Md Akhteruzzaman and BIWTA Chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq were special guest while Khulna Divisional Commissioner Anwar Hossain Howlader chaired the programme.

BIWTA Chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq appreciated the project, saying it will improve the socio-economic status of marginal people in the south-west belt of the country.

Among others, Khulna Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Helal Hossain and Superintendent of Police SM Shafiullah were present on the occasion.
