Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called upon the country’s people to take to the street for ‘revival of democracy in a bid to build an effective democratic state’.

The one-party rule still prevails in different countries including Bangladesh, he said, adding that freedom of speech, voting rights, human dignity and human equality ‘no longer exist in Bangladesh’.

The BNP secretary general made the comments in a statement issued on Tuesday on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy. Mirza Fakhrul alleged that many people have fallen victim to enforced disappearance, killing and extrajudicial killing due to differences of opinion.

“Khaleda Zia is now imprisoned in false and fabricated cases as she is not freed yet completely. Now we are going through worst times,” he added.
