1.6 lakh cft sand auctioned in Noakhali

NOAKHALI: Sadar Upazila administration on Sunday auctioned 1 lakh 58 thousand 348 cubic feet sand which were mined illegally from arable lands of different places of the district.

The illegally extracted sand were sold at an open auction at Tin Vayer Dokan area in Dakshin Nazirpur village of the upazila Saturday morning.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Convener of Auction Committee Farhana Jahan Upama, Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Member Secretary of Auction Committee Mohammad Zakaria, Upazila Engineer Md Amirul Islam, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Zahirul Islam and Ashwadia Union Parishad Chairman Golam Hossain Bablu, among others were present on the occasion.

Mohammad Zakaria said that Upazila Administration conducted a mobile court drive in Gopi Ballavpur and Tin Vayer Dokan area under Ashwadia union on August 13. During the drive sand mining machines and pipes were destroyed and huge sand were seized.

Later, an evaluation committee, approved by the district magistrate, conducted an on-the-spot investigation and submitted an evaluation report on the seized sand, which was sold at an open auction.

The sand were sold at Taka 8 lakh 3 thousand 773 including VAT and taxes.

UNO Farhana Jahan Upama said that sand mining from agricultural land is illegal. The upazila administration will continue its campaign against illegal sand mining.
