Holders Bashundhara Kings demanded for retention of the provision to have foreign players in the squad in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2020-21 season. Kings President Imrul Hassan also said that they would request Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) to increase the number of foreign players in the league.
“Some clubs want to take part in the upcoming BPL without foreign players but Bashundhara Kings doesn’t agree with them. We want foreign players in the new 2020-21 season. We will even request BFF to increase the number of foreign players in the league,” Imrul said.BFF Professional Football League Committee proposed to the clubs to take part in the 2020-21 BPL season without foreign players. The decision was made in their emergency meeting, chaired by BFF senior vice-president and PFLC chairman Abdus Salam Murshedy at BFF House in the capital on Tuesday.
The committee gave clubs the opportunity to be able to retain their local players in the 2020-21 season and proposed them to pay players the full amount of the contract money for the 2019-20 season and only 20 to 25 percent for the 2020-21 season. They also proposed to shorten the season and restrict the number of venues to 3-4.
“We can't imagine a top tier professional league without foreign players. It will spoil the beauty of competition. I think it is an unreasonable proposal and an attempt to undermine the growing popularity of the country’s football,” Kings President further added.
Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) champions Bashundhara Kings, which for the first time are taking part in double-leg Group E (South Asia) of AFC Cup 2020, are scheduled to play against Maldivian club Maziya SRC on October 23 and November 4, TC Sports on November 1 and Indian club Chennai City FC on October 26 and October 29, all in Maldives.
Ahead of their international assignment, Kings signed two new Brazilian midfielders namely Fernandes and Robinho last month. Their 10-month contract with Argentine forward Hernan Barcos will be in effect till November.
The ‘Transfermarkt’ claimed both Fernandes and Robinho joined Kings for a transfer fee of euro 725 thousand each or approximately Tk 72, 670,317 which is the highest transfer fee for any foreign player in Bangladesh. Argentine star Hernan Barcos joined BPL champions for euro 500 thousand or approximately Tk 50,408, 597.
