BARISHAL: Barishal University (BU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Sadequl Arefin has set a unique example of serving humanity in dealing with coronavirus-induced financial hardship of poor staff members and disadvantaged students of the university.

Since the outbreak, BU VC has taken multifaceted steps for the extremely poor and financially disadvantaged students, and also temporarily appointed daily wage based fourth class staff for the university. Many think other universities should emulate the steps taken at BU. After the closure of the university in March, 71 temporarily appointed daily wage based staff of the university became unemployed, as they were appointed under the provision of ‘no work no salary’.

Therefore, when the university was closed, the fourth class employees became unemployed. But out of sheer generosity, vice-chancellor of the university has created a special fund worth Tk 7 lakh so that those 71 staffers get regular salary.
