RU celebrates 66th founding anniv

Teachers and students of Rajshahi University led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Abdus Sobhan take out a procession on the university campus on Saturday, marking the university’s 66th founding anniversary. — Jahidul Islam Joy

Teachers, students and officials of Rajshahi University (RU) on Friday celebrated the university’s 66th founding anniversary on Saturday amid much enthusiasm and festivities. 

Marking the day, the authorities of the university chalked out different programmes, including rally, discussions, cultural function, and cricket tournament.    

RU vice chancellor Prof Dr M Abdus Sobhan inaugurated the programmes in the morning by releasing the balloons and pigeons on the campus.  

Teachers, students and officials of the university led by the VC took out a colorful procession with banners and placards.

RU pro-VCs Prof Dr Ananada Kumar Saha and Prof Dr Chawdhury Md Zakaria, treasurer Prof Dr Mostafizur Rahman Al Arif and proctor Prof Dr Luthfor Rahman, among others were present on the occasion.

The RU started its journey on July 6, 1953 with only 161 students and 68 teachers in 6 departments under 3 faculties. 

Currently, the university has over 1,231 teachers in 58 departments under 9 faculties, along with 9 research institutes and 37,248 regular students. 

The university has 18 residential halls including six for female and Shaheed Mir Abdul Kayyum International Dormitory for international students and researchers.

It has also 43 PhD and 106 M. Phil fellows and 149 researchers. Professor Itrat Hossain Zuberi was the first VC of the university.
