Shocking building code violations unearthed

The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), the state organisation which is tasked to ensure all structures are constructed as per rules, now claim that they have found shocking evidence of flouting the rules after its recent survey on high rise buildings on  fire safety and design.

It also claimed that the violations are so grave in nature that before they moved for taking action against the building owners, they required Prime Minister’s approval and directions. 

RAJUK conducted the survey as per public as declared by Housing and Public works Minster S M Rezaul Karim after the devastating fire at Banani’s FR tower. 

In an interview with the daily sun on Saturday, RAJUK Chairman Md Abdur Rahman said, “We have conducted the survey and we were shocked to find the grave violations of the building codes.”

He added: “We have completed our survey in eight zones of RAJUK within 15 days as per declaration housing and public works minister. We have surveyed 1,818 high rise building of 33 feet and above.”

“I will not make public at this moment the kind of faults we have found and the minister will brief the media when the time comes,” Rajuk Chairman.

Asked why the findings are not being made public, the RAJUK chairman said, “It now requires decision from policy-making level that goes up to the prime minister.

The Prime Minister is now on an official visit to Britain.

When contacted, housing and public works Rezaul said, he was out of Dhaka and did not make any comment on RAJUK’s findings.

Earlier on 30 March, Public Works and Housing Minister SM Rezaul Karim told media All the buildings that have been constructed violating the rules will be identified within 15 days.

“If necessary, the identified buildings will be either sealed off, demolished, or will have all operations suspended until they were certified to be safe,” he had also said.

RAJUK zone-7 authorized Nurul Alam, said “we have surveyed 98 buildings under our zone at Keraniganj, Jurain, Sutrapur and Wari. Each and every building, we have surveyed found violations in one way or another.”

The violations include deviation of buildings having no fire exits and designs, he added. 

RAJUK zone-2 authorized   Asraful Islam said, “We have conducted our survey Uttara, Tongi and Gazipur. We have surveyed 83 high rise buildings in Uttara and Tongi but found now high rise in Gazaipur.

Mostly of high rise don’t have fire exits properly and if have, are being kept unused. New buildings are more or less have started to maintain codes, he said
