Madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi, who died from burn injuries in an arson attack, was laid to the rest at her Charchandia village in Sonagazi upazila of Feni on Thursday evening.

Her namaj-e-janaza was held at Sonagazi Mohammad Saber Model Pilot High School ground around 5:50pm.

Mawlana Musa, father of the deceased, conducted the janaza with thousands of mourners participating in the funeral.

Awami League leader and president of Feni University Trustee Board Alauddin Nasim, District Administrator Mohammad Wahiduzzaman, Police Super SM Jahangir Alam Sarkar and Sonagazi Upazila Parishad Chairman Jahir Uddin Mahmud Lipton also attended the janaza.

The body of Nusrat reached her village home around 5:00pm from Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her burn injuries on Wednesday night.

A pall of gloom descended on the village after the body reached there. Her family members, relatives and others burst into tears.

DMCH Director Brigadier-General AKM Nasir Uddin said, “We are also deeply shocked at the death of Nusrat. We have completed her postmortem.”

On April 6, four miscreants in veils set fire to Nusrat on the rooftop of her Sonagazi Senior Fazil Madrasa as she refused to withdraw the case filed against the madrasa principal, Mawlana Siraj-ud-Daula, on charges of sexually harassing her.

On April 8, Nusrat’s elder brother filed the case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Sonagazi Police Station.

On Thursday noon, a Feni District Judge Court comprising Senior Judicial Magistrate Sharaf Uddin Ahmed placed the principal’s niece Umme Sultana Popi and Jobayer Ahmed, both students of the educational institution, on five-day remand each.

The investigation officer of the case Kamal Hossain confirmed it.

Earlier on Wednesday, Popi and Jobayer were produced before the court and a seven-day remand was sought against each.

On Wednesday, the court placed principal Siraj-ud-Daula on seven-day remand while English department lecturer Absar, Ariful, Nur, Kefayet Ullah Joni, Mohammad Alauddin and Shahidul Islam were placed on five-day remand each.

However, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), which has been assigned to investigate the case, has taken the arrested accused under the custody.

“We’ve got the case and case docket. By this time, our officers have begun investigation. No plus or minus will need in the sections of law under which the latest case of Nusrat was filed,” said PBI Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Banaj Kumar Muzumder.

PBI’s Feni additional superintendent of police Mohammad Moniruzzaman said they primarily interrogated the arrested accused.

Their three teams were working to arrest the fugitive accused, he added.

The fugitive accused are: councillor of Sonagazi Municipality Muksud Alam, the principal’s cohorts Nuruddin, the madrasa student Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Zabed Hasan and Abdul Quader.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that any one involved in the murder of Nusrat will not be spared.

He said this to journalists at his secretariat office in the capital on Thursday.

“PBI is investigating the case. The charge sheet will be submitted shortly.”

Law Minister Anisul Huq said, “If needed, the murder case will be tried under the Special Tribunal.”

“I will instruct the prosecution to take the murder case as a first priority so that the case is settled quickly.”
