Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to take stern action against killers of madrasah student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to take punitive action against those involved in the killing of Nusrat,” PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters on Thursday.

The directive came shortly after the female student succumbed to burn injuries she sustained in an arson attack in Sonagazi upazila of Feni on Wednesday night.

A group of students, loyal to Sonagazi Fazil Madrasa Principal Sirajuddoula, set fire to Nusrat Rafi at an exam centre on April 6 after he was arrested on charges of sexually harassing her.

Nusrat, who suffered 80 percent burns, was undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Ihsanul Karim said that the premier has expressed her profound shock at the death of Nusrat Rafi and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul.

She also conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family, he added.

Earlier, the premier had directed the physicians to send Rafi to Singapore for better treatment. Doctors sent reports to a Singapore hospital.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has urged law enforcement agencies to take stern action against Rafi’s killers.

In a statement, Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah and Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury also condoled the death of Nusrat Rafi and demanded exemplary punishment for the attackers.

Rafi’s condition made it difficult for her treatment abroad as 80 percent of her body, including the respiratory system, was burnt, exposing her to breathing problems.

Rafi accused principal Sirajuddoula of harassing her sexually on March 27 when she went to the madrasah to appear at Alim exam.

A group of masked youths, reported to be the principal’s stooge, took Nusrat to the rooftop and set her on fire in their bid to kill her.

Meanwhile, Feni unit Awami League expelled its leader Sohag Ahmed Bulbul for standing by the principal.

Bulbul is the general secretary of Kazirbagh Union unit and the chairman of the union.

Some 10 people, including the principal, have so far been arrested in connection with the arson attack on the female student.

On Tuesday, police arrested madrasa student Shampa in connection with the case.

A Feni court placed the principal on seven days’ remand and two others for five days in a case over the incident.

The two others are Abser Uddin, lecturer of English Department of the madrasa, and student Arif.

Besides, Moazzem Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Model Police Station, was withdrawn over the incident. The case was filed against eight persons, including principal Sirajuddoula, Absar Uddin, Feni municipality councillor Maksudul Alam Maksud, and four unidentified ones.

On Wednesday, the case was transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation.
