A Dhaka court on Monday placed two sons of the owner of Haji Wahed Mansion on a seven day remand in a case filed over the devastating fire at Chawkbazar in the capital that left 71 people dead.
Metropolitan magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order after police produced the two accused---Md Hasan and his brother Md Sohel—before the court seeking 10-day remand for their interrogation.Opposing the remand petition, the defence lawyer submitted a bail petition, but the court rejected it after a hearing.
On April 2, the siblings surrendered before a lower court and sought fresh bail in the case as tenure of their three-week bail period granted by the High Court ended.
The state opposed their plea. After a hearing, the court rejected the bail plea and sent them to jail.
A High Court bench on March 11 granted the siblings bail for three weeks, asking them to cooperate with the investigating officer (IO) of the case.
The High Court at that time asked them to surrender before the lower court on expiry of their bail period.
A case was filed with Chawkbazar police in this connection.
