Awami League mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam expressed his gratitude to the Election Commission and the government for holding a fair and peaceful election in Dhaka North City Corporation.

“Personally, I thank the Election Commission and the government for holding a fair election,” he said in his reaction after the end of the voting.

Atiq, former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA), said that voters cast their votes spontaneously.

“Election was held in a fair manner amid rough weather,” he said.

Referring to the voter turnout, he said his experience is good, but it would be more participatory if a political party (BNP) would join the race.

“The reality is a party did not participate in the polls, environment would different if they participate in the poll,” he said.

Atiq was taking a huge lead in the DNCC by-election against his nearest contestant.

Atiq bagged 5,79,508 votes in 928 centres, out of total 1,295, while Jatiya Party candidate Shafin Ahmed got 28,002 votes.

The mayoral post remained vacant following the death of Mayor Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
