The birthplace of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, born in Bikrampur in Munshiganj in the then Bengal Presidency, known for his discovery of millimetre waves and contributions to plant biology and Bangla literature, has become an attractive tourist spot.
The local school authority looking after the place has turned the memorial complex into a park-like venue. The complex is located at Rarikhal, on Dhaka-Dohar Highway, in Srinagar, Munshiganj.Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose was a Bengali genius who was a physicist, biologist, botanist, archaeologist, as well as an early writer of science fiction.
He pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics, made very significant contributions to plant science, and laid the foundations of experimental science in the Indian subcontinent. He is considered the father of Bengali science fiction.
He was made Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1903, Companion of the Order of the Star of India (CSI) in1911 and Knight Bachelor in1917 for his contributions to science and literature.
Sir Bose went to London on a lecture tour in 1896 and met Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi, who had been developing a radio wave wireless telegraphy system for over a year and was trying to market it to the British postal service. It was for Bose's disinterest in taking out a patent that Marconi is credited for the invention.
IEEE has named him one of the fathers of radio science. Bose also invented the crescograph, a device for measuring the growth of plants. A crater on the moon has been named in his honour.
