Two killed as train hits bus in Chattogram

Two bus passengers were killed and 25 others injured as a train rammed into a bus at Baroiyarhat Level Crossing in Mirsarai upazila of Chattogram on Sunday.

One of the deceased was identified as Sunirmal Chakma, 55, hailed from Khagrachhari district. But the identity of the other victim could not be known till filing of the report in the evening.

Robiul Azam, station officer of Mirsarai Fire Service and Civil Defence, said: “The accident took place as the Chattogram-bound ‘Bijoy Express’ hit the Khagrachhari-bound bus belonging to ‘S Alam Paribahan’ around 4:00am. At that time, the bus was crossing the railway tracks.

“The bus was badly damaged as the train dragged it almost 500 yards off the spot of accident, leaving the duo dead on the spot,” he said.

Of the injured, 15 people were undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and rest others at nearby hospitals, the official said.

Rail communication on Dhaka-Chattogram route remained suspended for two and a half hours after the accident.
