Chittagong: Road Transport and Bridge Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday asked Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury not to play any partisan role, reports UNB.
“Mr VC, you please don’t take any side. You needn’t to be so much partisan VC. Did Chhatra League make you the VC? Can they keep you in the chair? Or will they be able to keep you in the post by waging a movement after the expiry of your tenure?” he said, pointing at Iftekhar.
Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, came up with the remarks while talking to the CU VC about internal conflict of CU unit BCL at Chittagong city unit AL president ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury’s residence in the port city.
Before going to Mohiuddin’s residence, the AL general secretary asked the VC, CU unit BCL president Alamgir Tipu and its general secretary Fazle Rabbi Sujan to be present there to discuss the ruling party’s student body’s activities. But, Tipu was not present there.
At one stage of the discussion, Quader asked Dr Iftekhar why the BCL men often indulge in infighting over tender. “Why don’t you introduce online tender system?”
In reply, the VC said now the situation is under control and everything is on the right track.
He also told the minister, “Sir, they (Tipu and Sujan) used to show good gesture when they come to meet me. But, they engage in clashes over trivial matters when they come out of my office.”
Later, Quader asked the VC and BCL secretary to work for ensuring a congenial atmosphere on the CU campus.
He also told the VC, “You may support any party or ideology and it’s not unfair. But, you must play a non-partisan role in running the university administration and ensuring proper academic atmosphere.”
ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, AL central organising secretary Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Chittagong range) Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Md Shamsul Arefin, Superintendent of Police of Chittagong Nur-E Alam Chowdhury Mina, city unit BCL president Imran Ahmed Imu and its general secretary Nurul Azim Rony were, among others, present.
