The International Day of Older Persons will be observed in the country today as elsewhere across the globe, reports UNB.
The theme of this year’s Day is: “Take a Stand Against Ageism”. Different social and philanthropic organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day.
Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion.
In his message, the President said wisdom, experience and good advice of elders can guide the young generation to a right path. “In the context of Bangladesh’s socio-economic condition, it’s our moral responsibility to provide the elders with due honour, dignity and proper health care services.”
He hoped that various private organisations and people from all walks of life will make an effective contribution to protecting the rights of the elderly people.
The Prime Minister, in her message, termed the elderly people an integral part of the country’s total population, saying their role is the key behind the present society.
Wishing the success of the day, she hoped that international and regional efforts for the welfare of the elder persons will be expedited.
