A new law will be introduced with a provision to control the use of private cars allowing only one car for each family, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
A move is underway to this effect, he said.
The minister was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a rally on the World Car-Free Day at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq said that two roads on Gulshan-Banani and Mohammadpur-Mirpur routes will be declared car-free by March, next year.
“We shall make two city roads car-free by March, next year,” he said, adding only people will be allowed to walk on the roads on a particular day.
Annisul Huq said additional vehicles plying on the roads are responsible for perennial traffic jams.
“Twelve lakh vehicles are plying on the city roads while the capacity of vehicles is only four lakh,” he revealed.
