Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Thursday said tough actions will be taken against those extorting toll illegally on highways and ferry ghats across the country, reports UNB.
“Intelligence agencies have made a list of the extortionists who have been collecting toll illegally on several highways and ferry ghats.  If they (extortionists) don’t stop their activities immediately, stern actions will be taken against them”, the minister said.
He was briefing reporters after a meeting on extortion on highways and ferry ghats (terminals).
The government has identified several spots across the country where extortionists are very active and some of the spots have brought under close circuit camera surveillance system, the minister said.
Close circuit cameras will also be installed at other points to identify the extortionists, Asaduzzaman said.
He said the government has taken the initiative with a view to making people’s journeys on highways hassle-free and comfortable ones.
Government toll collection authorities and labour organisations cannot collect more toll than the ones fixed by the ministries concerned, he said.
