The Election Commission on Tuesday started distributing ballot papers and other election materials to its district offices to hold the fourth-phase polls in 725 union parishads on May 7.
EC sources said that the distribution of ballots has started from five public printing presses in the capital.
“The EC will send all election materials to the district election offices by Wednesday (today),” said EC deputy secretary Rakib Uddin Mandal. The ballots and other election materials would be sent to polling centres from returning officers’ offices a day before the voting.
EC officials said they are sending over 2 crore ballots. White-coloured ballots will use for votes for chairman candidates, green for general members and pink for preserved members. A total of 3,245 chairman candidates, including 1,522 independent ones, are vying for 692 posts in the fourth-phase elections. Meanwhile, 33 Awami League chairman candidates have been elected unopposed.
Meanwhile, the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the fifth-phase UP elections expired on Tuesday. The EC is holding polls in 4,275 union parishads in phases on a party basis.
Besides, the Election Commission has directed the authorities concerned to file a case against Chhagalnaiya Upazila chairman Mejbahul Haider Chowdhury for violating the electoral code of conduct.
It also asked the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry to take punitive action against the chairman.
