CHITTAGONG: Tourism Ministry has continued to be make efforts to attract one million foreign tourists in the next two years.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon said this while inaugurating Bangladesh Parjaton Corporation (BPC) constructed Motel Saikat Complex at Station Road in the city on Tuesday.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, Rashed Khan Menon said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had declared the year ‘2016’ as tourism year. Tourism ministry continued works aiming at attracting one million foreign tourists in 2016-2017. With achievement of the target, tourism sector would contribute five percent to the country’s GDP.
The tourism minister put emphasis on utilising the scenic beauty of hill, river and sea-beset Chittagong for flourishing tourism here.
Referring to importance of infrastructural facilities and communication in tourism sector, the minister said works of Dhaka-Chittagong 4-lane highway expansion project are nearing an end. There are plans for Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar 4-lane project and extending railway track from Dohazari in Chittagong to Gundhum in Cox’s Bazar.
Implementation of these projects would help utilise the tourism potential of Chittagong a lot, observed the minister.
Besides, private flight would be introduced in Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar air route very soon and Chittagong airport would be expanded further.
Tender would be floated for construction of 3rd terminal at Dhaka airport, he said.
Employment would be created for some five lakh people in tourism industry by 2018 to contribute to national income and employment, said Minister Rashed Khan Menon.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary SM Golam Faruk, concerned parliamentary standing committee members Tanvir Imam, Begum Sabiha Nahar and BPC Chairman Aparup Chowdhury also spoke at the ceremony among others.
The ceremony was told that BPC constructed the 10-storey Motel Saikat Building on 0.91 acres of BPC land at Station Road under a Tk 460 million project.
There are one international suite, seven standard suites, 66 double rooms and 79 twin-bed rooms in the Motel Saikat building that also has two banquet halls of 400 seats, 100-seat Restaurant Karnaphuli, 30-seat coffee shop Sampan and two gyms.
Mentionable, the project was approved in 2003 while the foundation stone of the Motel Saikat complex was laid on April 19, 2004.
