Traffic movement on the busy Rampura-Badda road in the city came to a halt for about one and a half hours causing untold sufferings to the commuters following a road blockade erected by the workers of Nipunika Garment Factory on Monday.
Several hundred workers of the RMG factory took to the street around 3:30 pm on Monday demanding their monthly wages, police said.
“At one stage of their demonstration, they blocked the road in front of Holland Tower at Central Badda.”
Saleha Begum, a factory worker, said, “The factory owners announced on April 01 that they would pay due wages of the workers on April 20. But they later extended the date to April 25. Accordingly, we gathered in front the factory for our wages on Monday afternoon. But finding no representative of the factory owners, we started chanting slogans against them. At one stage, we blocked the road demanding our dues.”
However, the workers removed their barricade around 5:00 pm after police intervention.
Contacted, Badda police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Jalil confirmed the incident saying, “We are trying to resolve the issue.”
