A prison sergeant of Kashimpur Central Jail was gunned down by unidentified assailants near the prison’s main gate in Gazipur in broad daylight on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Rustam Ali, 50, a sergeant instructor of Kashimpur jail.
Rustam was on leave preparatory to retirement (LPR) since November last year, jail sources said.
Witnesses said Rustam was at a pharmacy near the prison around 11:15am. Suddenly, two people on a motorbike whizzed past the area after firing on Rustam, leaving him dead on the spot.
Superintendent Subrata Kumar of Kashimpur Central Jail 1 said Rustam was in civil dress when he was murdered.
The body has been sent to the morgue of Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital.
Abdus Salam Sarkar, resident doctor of Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital, said “Rustam received bullets in the left side of his chest, cheek and left hand.”
Harun-or-Rashid, Gazipur superintendent of police, said one person was detained for interrogation.
Sub-Inspector Mobarak Hossain, in-charge of Konabari police outpost, said they seized two empty cartridges from the crime spot.
Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin said jail authorities all over the country have been instructed to beef up security.
