The government has directed deputy commissioners (DCs) to investigate whether any artificial shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is being created in parts of the country to charge consumers higher prices.
Power, Energy and Mineral
Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku issued the directive during an
online meeting with DCs at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
He also ordered action
against those selling LPG at prices higher than the rates set by the Bangladesh
Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
He said there was no
shortage of LPG supply in the country, but an artificial crisis might have been
created in some areas to sell the fuel at
inflated prices.
The DCs were instructed to
submit reports with evidence on why claims of LPG shortages were emerging
despite adequate supply and why consumers were being charged higher prices, he
said.
Iqbal Hasan said necessary
measures would be taken after receiving information from the DCs and holding
discussions with importers and other stakeholders.
He said steps would also
be taken to increase LPG supply in areas where shortages were found.
The minister warned that
action would be taken against anyone creating an artificial shortage or selling
LPG above the BERC-fixed price.
He also instructed the DCs
to remain more vigilant and alert to ensure normal LPG supply across the
country.
