At least 13 people were killed and 34 others injured on Tuesday (October 20) when a tourist bus collided with a heavy truck west of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, state media reported.

According to Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, the fatal collision occurred on the Cairo–Asyut Western Desert Road.

Thirteen people died at the scene, while 34 sustained injuries.

Rescue workers promptly began clearing debris from the highway following the crash.

Heavy cranes were deployed to extract the wreckage of the bus, which suffered extensive damage to its front section.

Passenger seats and bus parts were scattered across the roadside, with fragments lodged in the rear of the truck.

Al-Ahram reported that the injured are receiving treatment at a hospital in the Giza area. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Traffic accidents remain a frequent occurrence in Egypt, often attributed to reckless driving, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and lax enforcement of traffic laws.

Official statistics show that road crashes claimed nearly 6,000 lives in the country last year.

The disaster follows a series of recent road tragedies in the region.

Last month, a bus crash in the Sinai region killed 22 people, including 10 tourists from Jordan.

In August, a collision between two pickup trucks carrying agricultural laborers in northern Egypt left at least 18 people dead, many of them children.
