Iranian missiles and drones targeted US bases and facilities
in neighbouring countries early Sunday causing major blasts in Bahrain, Qatar
and the UAE, including in Dubai’s busy Marina district.
It was not immediately clear if the explosions resulted from
air defence interceptions or impact, but came hours after President Masoud
Pezeshkian had apologised to Arab Gulf nations in a rare address.
Pezeshkian left it open for US bases in the Arab countries
to become potential targets should they launch attacks on Iran.
However, Iranian conservative leaders strongly criticised
the president’s approach as “weak,” and the first Israeli strikes on Tehran’s
oil facilities during the war further emboldened them to order prompt and
resolute strikes on US missions across the region.
Western analysts fear the Israeli strikes would give Iran an
incentive to hit the oil facilities of Arab nations, and further worsen the
conflict.

Iran president retracts apology remark amid internal furore

However, he retracted the "apology" remark he had put in the first statement earlier on Saturday morning, after Iran's hardline leaders strongly condemned his conciliatory approach as "weak."
The incident also laid bare the rift inside Tehran's leadership circle.
