A Dhaka University (DU) Chhatra Dal activist has been accused of embezzling several lakh of taka through fraudulent investment schemes, prompting his arrest and permanent expulsion from the organisation.

Mahi Chowdhury Arnab, convenor member of the Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall unit of DU Chhatra Dal, was apprehended by victims in the capital’s North Ibrahimpur area on Saturday evening and later handed over to police.

According to victims, Arnab introduced himself as a big cat food businessman, claiming to own 20 to 22 shops across the capital. He allegedly lured individuals into investing in his business and collected large sums of money under false pretences.

One of the victims, Ashiquzzaman Molla, said Arnab was detained after being called under the pretext of further investment.

He added that multiple individuals later came forward with similar allegations of fraud. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.

Another victim, Himel, alleged that Arnab took Tk40 lakh from him.

Although a portion of the money was returned, Tk35 lakh remains unpaid. Victims claim Arnab embezzled several crores of taka from different individuals, including DU students.

Police confirmed the arrest and ongoing legal process. Kafrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sajjad Hossain said authorities received allegations of large-scale embezzlement against Arnab. “With the help of the victims, he was brought to the police station.

Preparations are underway to file a fraud case,” he said, adding that the court later ordered his detention in jail.

Meanwhile, DU Chhatra Dal took immediate organisational action. Office secretary Mallik Wasi Uddin Tami said the organisation launched an internal probe after the allegations surfaced. “As the allegations were proven, he has been expelled for life from all posts, including primary membership,” he said.

In an official notice signed by DU Chhatra Dal president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas and general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, leaders and activists have been instructed to sever all organisational ties with Arnab. The organisation also assured legal support for the victims.
