Bangladeshi Filmmaker Adnan Al Rajeev and his team have brought home the country’s first-ever award from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, winning a Special Jury Mention for their short film “Ali”.
Ali featured Shihab Nurun Nabi as the production designer. Shihab’s artistry captured the very soul of the story, something that leaves a lasting impression on the Cannes jury.
Shihab was present at the festival and shared his emotions, by saying, “When I heard the name of our short film announced on that historic stage, it felt like this honour didn’t just belong to Ali but to all of us. I’m only the production designer but every colour, every room, every play of light and shadow in this film carried my literature and culture. I couldn’t hold back my tears—because this isn’t just a short film; it is our story, our struggle, our roots.”
Back in Dhaka, Shihab Nurun Nabi remains equally busy. He drew wide attention for recreating the atmosphere of 1990s Dhaka in Shakib Khan’s film “Toofan”. Continuing in that vein, he’s now worked on Shakib’s new film “Tandob”.
In 2021, he won the National Film Award for his work on “Nona Joler Kabbo”.
