The High Court on Tuesday ordered the central bank to withdraw from the market the books written on the history of Bangladesh Bank as the court found distortion of its historical contents.

The bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali passed the order.

In December 2017, the central bank published the book titled “Bangladesh Bank er Itihash (History of Bangladesh Bank)” in which a picture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not included and his contribution to establishing Bangladesh Bank was downplayed.

The court has also summoned the former central bank executive director, Shuvangkar Saha, to explain why the publication does not contain the photograph of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and contains illustrations of former Pakistan president Ayub Khan and former governor  of East Pakistan Monem Khan. The court had ordered the finance secretary to file a probe report on the matter.

It had also issued a rule, asking why distorting the history should not be declared illegal.

The finance secretary, home secretary, Liberation War secretary, Bangladesh Bank governor, executive manager and Abul Kalam Azad of the publicity and publication department of Bangladesh Bank were made respondents to the rule.

A four-member committee headed by an additional Finance Secretary, Dr Md Zafar Uddin, was formed to probe the matter and submit the report.

Earlier based on a news report a probe finds that there is no mention of Bangabandhu, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League government role in the book.

According to the report, it could have been possible to include the photograph since the second chapter of the book talks about the Bangladesh Bank’s history in the light of the country’s struggle for independence.
