People from all walks of life paid their last homage to prominent poet Al Mahmud, placing floral wreaths to his coffin on Bangla Academy premises on Saturday.

He will be laid to rest in Morail village, his birthplace, of Brahmanbaria district on Sunday (today).

Born on July 11, 1936, Mir Abdus Shkkur Al Mahmud emerged as one of the great poets of Bangla literature in 1950s. He won Ekushey Padak for his outstanding contribution to contemporary literature.

At a stretch, Al Mahmud was a poet, novelist, essayist, short story writer, and a journalist.

On Saturday, his body was kept at Nazrul Mancha at around 11:45am and his namaj-e-janaza was held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Zohr prayer. Thereafter his dead body was taken to his residence at Mogbazar in the capital.

His elder son Sharif  Mahmud said: “We will take our father’s dead body to his birthplace in Brahmanbaria district tomorrow (Sunday) for burial.”

The poet breathed his last at 11:05 pm on Friday at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Ibn Sina Hospital in the city’s Dhanmondi area. He was 82.
