The High Court on Wednesday cleared way for the Election Commission to arrange by-election to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
The HC also permitted elections to 18 newly constructed wards under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).The mayoral post of DNCC fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
On January 8 last year, the EC announced a schedule for the DNCC mayoral by-polls and election to 36 wards. Such polls were scheduled to be held on February 26.
Ataur Rahman and Jahangir Alam, Union Council chairpersons of Bhatara and Beraid, filed writ petitions challenging legality of inclusion of their electoral areas into city corporations.
The petitioners are BNP and Awami League leaders of their localities.
However, the High Court lifted its previous order that stayed the DNCC by-polls and election to 36 wards under two city corporations in Dhaka.
A division bench comprising Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order on Wednesday due to absence of petitioners’ lawyers.
