BUCHAREST: The Romanian government fired the head of its tax authority on Thursday as debate raged over the true state of finances of the central European country that now holds the EU presidency.

Announcing the dismissal of tax chief Ionut Misa, Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici said the system for collecting value-added or sales tax (VAT) -- an area where fraud is particularly high in Romania -- could be improved.

"The fiscal authority needs to radically change its behaviour in 2019," the minister said, but did not give a specific reason for Misa's dismissal.
